Starting is often the hardest part, isn’t it? But here I am, finally writing my first blog of 2025. For the longest time, I felt stuck - completely blocked from getting over that first hurdle.
I’ve always wanted to share my wellness knowledge, to offer insights and tips to those on their own journeys. Yet every time I sat down to write, I was paralysed - whether by fear of failure, fear of judgment, or simply not knowing where to begin.
Then, I stumbled upon a vlog that spoke about how starting is the hardest part and this really hit home. I thought back to past experiences: teaching my first yoga class, attending my first bachata dance lesson. Each time, the lead-up to that first step was the most intimidating part. Fear can be immobilising, making the challenge seem insurmountable.
But, once you take that leap - once you do the thing - a shift happens. You realise your worst fears didn’t materialise. Maybe you’re even winging it! And in that moment, the mindset begins to change.
A New Year, A Fresh Start
With 2025 here, many of us are setting new year’s resolutions. For a lot of people, the start of a new year feels like the perfect time to turn a new page, set goals and adopt new habits. But when the goal is unfamiliar - when it’s something you’ve never tried before - it can feel daunting.
So how do you start? How do you overcome that initial hurdle?
The truth is, there’s no magic formula. But there are strategies to help shift your mindset and prepare for the journey ahead. Let me share what has worked for me and what might help you turn your resolutions into reality.
Meet Yourself Where You Are
This piece of advice came from my yoga teacher when I was learning to incorporate yoga philosophy into my teachings. It’s a simple yet powerful concept: meet yourself where you are right now.
If your goal feels overwhelming - like running a marathon, for example - start small. Acknowledge where you are today and focus on what’s achievable. Maybe your first step is downloading a “couch to 5K” app and building up slowly.
Big dreams and goals are inspiring, but the gap between where we are now and where we want to be can feel like a chasm. The key to bridging that gap is breaking it into smaller, actionable steps.
Set SMART Goals
Have you heard of SMART goals? They’re specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Setting SMART goals gives your aspirations structure and clarity. For example, instead of saying, “I want to get fit,” a SMART goal would be, “I will work out three times a week for 30 minutes for the next month.”
This approach ensures your goals are clear and manageable, making it easier to get started and track your progress.
Practice Self-Compassion
The truth is; no one is perfect the first time they try something. Whether you’re learning a new skill, language, or sport, there will be challenges. Don’t let your inner critic put you down.
Instead of beating yourself up over mistakes, practice self-compassion. Remind yourself that you’re doing your best in this moment. Acknowledge the courage it takes to start something new, and celebrate every small step forward.
Keep a Journal
Journaling is an incredible tool for self-discovery. By tracking your thoughts, habits, and progress, you can start to notice patterns.
For me, journaling helped me realise I had a recurring pattern: every year, I said I would start a blog, and every year, I put it off. Writing about my fears and hesitations brought them to the surface, where I could confront them.
Use your journal to identify what holds you back or propels you forward. Notice when you’re at your best - whether it’s a certain time of day or after a particular routine. Self-awareness is key to unlocking your potential.
Surround Yourself with Support
The people you surround yourself with can make a huge difference. Seek out friends, family, or even online communities that inspire and support your goals. Seeing others succeed can remind you that your aspirations are possible, too.
The First Step Is Yours to Take
"To begin, begin" - William Wordsworth
Starting might feel like the hardest part, but once you take that first step, you’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of. Remember, progress isn’t about perfection - it’s about persistence.
So here’s to 2025: a year of starting, learning, and growing. Let’s meet ourselves where we are, set realistic goals, and show up for the journey ahead.
What’s your first step going to be? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments section.
